Turkey Monitors Desertification with the Model Developed by TÜBİTAK BİLGEM YTE

The events, which coincide with the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, with the participation of nearly 20 countries at the level of ministers and senior bureaucrats, were held in Ankara between 17-19 June.

In this important organization, the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Dr. Bekir Pakdemirli, in his opening speech stated that desertification is a silent, more dangerous and insidious problem that threatens our world and is growing day by day.

In addition, Mr. Pakdemirli, who conveyed the work they have done within the scope of combating desertification, emphasized that the “Desertification Model of Turkey” and “Desertification Risk Map of Turkey” have been prepared in order to identify areas sensitive to desertification and to carry out projects in these areas as a priority.

Thanks to the system developed by TÜBİTAK BİLGEM YTE, priority areas to be taken in terms of desertification are determined, and by this means, the improvement of the destroyed lands, the protection and sustainable use of the land will be ensured. As a result of the studies, it has been determined that the high-risk regions are Konya/Karapınar, Iğdır/Aralık, Şanlıurfa/Ceylanpınar and Salt Lake basins.
